Life Before Spurs

I was born and raised in Detroit, MI on May 20th 1981. I have two younger brothers and like a majority of Americans, my parents divorced when I was relatively young.

I played whats called AYSO soccer for 5-6 from age 6-11. I loved playing soccer and was quite good at it. Ive even been told I scored a hat trick once, but I have no recollection of this feat.

My mother remarried a prick and I never played soccer again. I grew up like most in this area, and as the pictures will attest, a fan of our Detroit teams. We had the Detroit Tigers for baseball, Red Wings for Hockey, the woeful Lions for American football, and the Pistons for basketball.

In my teen age years and into adulthood I was a rabid sports fan. Our baseball season lasts some 162 games  and I rarely missed a game either by tv, radio, or in person. My passion for our NFL franchise was the pinnacle of my sports world.

I started a new job in 2007 and my boss came from Wolverhampton, England. Through-out my first year I made snide comments about his love for what he called football, and which I referred to as a "sissy sport". I talked trash nearly everyday while reiterating that he was missing out by not watching our local sports teams.

Still a little green at my company, in an effort to kiss some ass, I decided I would take the opportunity to watch the 2008 Euro Cup. I had no idea such a competition existed nor did I care to watch more than a few games. My sole intention  was so I could tell my boss that I put in an effort, talk a little shop, and tell him all the things I said the year before were spot on about this "gay" sport.

I didnt know anything prior to tuning in via ESPN. I had no idea what the rules were, I had never heard of the players, and my intention to watch the first half quickly came and went. Before I knew it I was hooked. I watched every game  I could. It struck such a chord that I even teared up while watching Turkey and their last minute heroics.

The time came to renew my NFL season tickets and my baseball 21 game package, yet I couldn't. I was in love with what truly is "the beautiful game." Instead I poured my money into satellite television and paid to have Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta sports added to my tv line up, along with an internet subscription. Combined this provided me with almost every premier league game, every weekend, coupled with my DVR I was able to watch proper football from Sun up to Sun down.

Prior to the Euro Cup I had no idea that there was a Champions League, Major League Soccer(usa), an EPL, or even a World Cup, but since that very special summer in 2008 I haven't seen a full baseball game nor can I any longer stand to watch more than my hometown NFL team.

and so my journey toward becoming a Spurs fan began......but not without a few stops along the way.
